Picture Book Black Eyed Susan Nominees 2021 (Part Two)

 In no particular order, except how I read them.


Vivid reminder that names are important.  Always try hard to pronounce another's name as they do. I needed lessons in Chinese with one of my students and never seemed to get it right. Show that you care and are trying.

True Story !  Bronx Zoo foster mom starts with a lion cub and ends with 2 decade career as a Zookeeper to infant animals.  Using common "sense and intuition", Helen Martini nurtured hundreds of baby animals.

Lubna is a refugee, living in a tent city, who has a friend in a pebble. A pebble she shares everthing with: memories of war, her brothers, memories of home.  Amir, has joined the tent city becomes friends with Lubna.  When Lubna and her father depart for a new home, she leaves Pebble with Amir with instructions to tell Pebble everything he feels.

Barnabus is a failed pet project, half elephant half mouse he lives in a bell jar in a lab with other pet projects. Pip, a cockroach tells Banabus about the outside, green grass, mountins with stars.  Failed projects will be destoyed and barnabus plans to escape.

An invention story: how did noodle ramen comes to be? Through lots of experimentation and presistance in postwar Japan. Momofuku Ando worked for years to produce a nutrious and quick food for hungry people. "The world is peaceful only when everyone has enough to eat."
